Drinking KNOW YOUR SOMM FIRST SIP

David Osenbach

Wine director, Providence à 5955 Melrose Ave (323-460-4170, providencela.com)

What’s your favorite wine that’s less than $10? I have two! Chat Pitre blanc from Clos de l’Amandaie in southwestern France. It’s a delicious, easy-to-drink blend of equal parts grenache blanc, roussanne and vermentino. The second is Viña Ijalba’s “Livor” from Rioja, Spain—a really tasty, young, juicy tempranillo.

What wine do you always keep in your fridge? I always have a bottle of riesling. It goes with everything. And there’s always a bottle of champagne in there.

Where do you go to drink wine in L.A.? I love going to Augustine (13456 Ventura Blvd; 818-990-0938, augustinewinebar.com). It’s a fun place because there’s always something crazy and interesting [going on].

Do you have a hangover cure? Nutritional yeast. You can buy it at Whole Foods, and it looks like this weird, yellowish-brown flaky powder. But it’s loaded with B vitamins, so after a night of indulging, you just take a big spoonful of nutritional yeast and then chase it with a glass of water.

& Mead Finally, a safe space for cider fans. Great Society opened in Long Beach as SoCal’s first cider-and- mead house, offering more than 20 selections from both global and local producers, like the Cactus Red from 101 Cider House in Thousand Oaks. Yes, there is meaty pub food, but Great Society also highlights vegan, vegetarian and gluten- free dishes. à 601 E Broadway, Long Beach (562-270-5625, greatsocietycider.com)

Mine, West L.A.’s latest neighborhood watering hole. The whiskey haven boasts a solid pizza program and craft cocktails like the Smog Check, a smoky version of a classic Manhattan. Order a slice, then turn your attention to one of the 20 flatscreens around the boisterous bar to channel your newfound love for the Los Angeles Rams. à 11363 Santa Monica Blvd (310-231-0239, thenickel mine.com)
