show review | 2016 Wittmann shows Xpress in action

Wittmann Battenfeld showed the first model in its new EcoPower Xpress range of fast cycling all-electric injection moulding machines, which will extend from 240 to 500 tonnes and will be available from Q3 2017. Features of the Xpress models include a five point self-locking toggle clamp with rack and pinion servo electric drive providing a maximum closing speed of up to 1.8 m/s. Ejector drive is by a servo- hydraulic system, with servo-electric available as an option. Injection units use a water-cooled gear driven servo-electric plasticising drive system while a pair of synchronised servo motors handle injection via a rack and pinion system. The new machine was

demonstrated in a 400 tonne version at the show running an 8-cavity IML lid application on a 4.7s cycle with Wittmann’s own side entry robotics. Wittmann Battenfeld manag- ing director Georg Tinschert

said the machine offered a 600 mm/s injection speed but, more importantly, a 1.5g accel- eration and deceleration rate. “This is what really counts. We are 30% more dynamic than an accumulator system,” he said. The Xpress, in common with all the machines on the Wittmann Battenfeld stand, was equipped with the latest Unilog B8 control system. This uses a large 21.5 inch multi- touch panel and is, according to Tinschert, the first moulding machine control system to utilise the Windows 10 IoT (Internet of Things) operating

system. The system supports the company’s new CMS (Condition Monitoring System), which monitors machine activity at a component level to optimise performance. l In the peripherals area, Wittmann showed the new R9 robot controller and Primus 16 pick and place servo robot for machines up to 200 tonnes. Available immediately, the latter is targeted primarily at Asian markets but will be offered as a low cost option globally. Other peripheral equipment introductions included the G-Max 33

granulator, Tempro plus D250 temperature controller and net5 materials handling system control. Wittmann Group General Manager Michael Wittmann said the company expected to post a 5.7% sales gain this year to €380m, smaller than the near 20% growth it recorded last year but more manageable for the company. “We have had strong growth in all markets this year. We are seeing strong demand for SmartPower and MacroPower machines and for ancillaries,” he said. ❙ www.wittmann-group.com

Roctool puts a perfect gloss on moulding

Roctool (HD Plastics) demonstrated produc- tion of an injection moulded plastic housing in 100% recycled ABS with a perfect high gloss finish and moulded-in sub-micron features using its rapid heat-cool mould temperature control technology. The part was produced on a 200 tonne

any other moulding system, he said. Boulanger said Roctool’s display at K2016 marked a change in approach for the company from selling the technology to marketing the results. Under the HD Plastics branding, it has begun to build a database of 30 materials that shows what can be achieved using the Roctool system, which combines induction heating and water cooling. This allows mould tempera- tures to be cycled to achieve glossy surfaces, replicate fine features and eliminate weld lines. ❙ www.roctool.com
