2016 | show review Husky synchronises cap production
Husky Injection Molding Systems used the show to launch its HyperSync system for production of specialty closures.
Husky already has an
established integrated mould and machine offering in the beverage closure sector with its HyCap 4 system. HyperSync addresses the market for specialty closures such as flip-tops, integrating the mould more closely into the machine and using its eIMC servo-driven in-mould closing technologies to allow greater overlap of functions and maximum optimisation of movements. Savings of up to 2s per cycle are said to be achievable.
Hexpol TPE starts US production
Hexpol TPE said at the show it had started up its first production in North America. The company, which last month announced a rebranding of its Elasto and Müller Kunststoffe businesses under the Hexpol TPE name, said it had installed TPE produc- tion and product develop- ment capabilities at Hexpol’s RheTech Colors plant at Sandusky in Ohio. Early focus for the
company in the US will be on Dryflex TPEs for automotive and consumer applications. ❙

President Medical and Specialty Packaging. “We are able to achieve a 20% improve- ment in productivity and, with the electrification of the system, are able to improve the precision, too.” Husky also provided an

update on the multi-layer barrier PET preform technology it introduced at the NPE show in the US in 2015, based on its HyPET 5 platform. Gerardo Chiara, President Global Beverage Packaging, said the company has now taken 14 system orders, with five already in operation and two currently in the process of installation. Husky, market leader in PET manufacturing systems, took the decision to develop its own barrier preform manufac- turing platform following Milacron’s acquisition in 2014 of Kortec, which had previously supplied turnkey coinjection preform systems around Husky moulding machines. ❙

Multiple ideas at Billion
For the first time in its history French machinery maker Billion showed only multi- component machines on its stand. “It’s about innovation, We are trying to give people new ideas,” said Peter Kirkham, Managing Director of its UK subsidiary. Billion has long argued the benefits that multi-component production and in-mould assembly can bring to customers and a project for long-standing UK customer Thumbs-Up demonstrated that perfectly. Together with the housewares manufacturer it redesigned a mono-material PP plastics washing up bowl to include soft TPE grips and anti-slip base using basic core-back technology.
“We have added some functions and appeal while reducing the cycle time by 30%,” Kirkham said. The project was running on machine, a
a 400 tonne Select2
packaging version of Billion’s Select all-electric machine with revised toggle lubrication, larger clamp sliders and modified high performance ballscrew operation. The company also demon-
strated a 200 tonne Select model with integrated Easyturn servo-drive rotary table producing a multi-com- ponent PA part with robot insert loading and LSR overmoulding and a simplified in-mould assembly application on a 150 tonne Select machine. The latter used a programma-
ble robot (built by Sepro for Billion and integrated into the machine control) to replace complicated mould move- ments.
Billion CEO Korbinian Kiesel said the company is on course for a result of around €35m for 2016, similar to 2015, adding that the machinery maker prioritises profitability over volume. He said this allows it to maintain the level of investment needed to remain a global supplier. The company invested around €1.5m in a new manufacturing building last year and a similar amount in a new ERP system this year. €2m has been earmarked for new machining centres for 2017. ❙
