Romi unveils new machine control
Brazilian machinery maker Romi introduced its new CM20 control system, which was demonstrated on an EN600 600 tonne servo- hydraulic machine. Built around B&R
Automation control technology, the new system uses a 19-inch multi-touch panel with a new menu structure that allows for more intuitive setting and better integration with MES software (the latter demonstrated with a live connection to a Mattec system). The control features an
“Outlook” style interface that allows information to be “pinned” to the screen while viewing other pages, which is said to be particu- larly useful when setting up complex processes such as cascade injection. Romi European Subsidi- aries Manager Joao Paulo Barbosa Inacio said the European market currently accounts for around 20% of the company’s production in unit terms. ❙

Merck’s IM3D decorative technology is being marketed by PolyOne PolyOne and Merck talk IM3D
PolyOne and Merck provided more detail of the IM3D decoration technology, which combines the use of pigment- ed decorative film and mould texturing to create enhanced metallic 3D effects on plastic surfaces. The technology behind the
process was developed and patented by special effects pig- ment company Merck and, according to Application Engineer Markus Schum, was the result of some simple experimentation. “We found we could get this effect in print so we thought: Can we get it in plastic?” he said. Those trials found that metallic pigmented films, which can be produced by extrusion or injection moulding, would pick up shallow (typically less than 0.5mm) relief texturing in the mould surface and amplify it to
create a deep 3D impact. While Merck had the
technology, Schum said taking it to market required a partner with good contacts at all levels in the supply chain. And that is where PolyOne comes in, according to Christoph Palm, PolyOne Vice President and General Manager for Colour and Additives EMEA and India. “Based on the leads we
have we see interest from many different areas of the market. It can be used in packaging, electronics, automotive. What is interesting is that some companies have not only shown an interest but said: ‘I want to have that,’” Palm said.
Using the technology would
be relatively straightforward for any processor familiar with IMD or IML production, according to the partners. “We
still need to finalise the first industrial production but I would say the cycle times would be similar to in-mould labelling,” Palm said. Poly- One’s role in the partnership, he explained, is to work with interested OEMs, find appro- priate processing partners, carry out the necessary design modelling, and supply technical support and masterbatch. PolyOne also introduced a
new line of OnCap laser marking grades that will work with the faster speeds of the latest laser systems, as well as extending its Gravitech high density compound line to include colourable grades (colouring was previously limited due to the special dense fillers used). ❙

PTS adds halogen compliant PC grades
Polymer Technology & Services (PTS) extended its Tristar line of polycarbonate- based compounds with four halogen-compliant grades with UL 746R and 746H certification. UL 746R certification
indicates compliance with the EU’s RoHS legislation, which

limits the amount of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and polybro- minated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) a plastic can contain. UL 746H certifies conformity with the chlorine and bromine requirements of IEC 61249.

intended for electrical and telecommunication devices, business machines, and small and large appliances. They will be available in Europe, North America and Asia and offer UL94 flammability ratings ranging from V-0 to 5VA.
