AIMPLAS will contribute to booster the circular economy on European urban bulky waste recovery
The urban bulky waste recovery is an unfinished business in most EU countries. Out of the 19 million tonnes of furniture, mattresses, upholstery, textiles and garden products, among others, dumped each year, more than 60% end in landfills.
AIMPLAS coordinates the European project URBANREC to improve the logistics and the wastes treatment by means of innovative solutions of mechanical and chemical recycling that will make possible obtaining high added-value recycled materials, such as adhesives; solvents; additives; foams; composites reinforced with fibres and felts; reinforced plastics and WPC (Wood Plastic
Composites). The application of these new technologies will allow a waste recovery of 82% and will generate a net profit per ton of €225, more than 2,000 million in year in Europe.
Polyurethane or latex foams, mixtures of different plastic, different fabrics or wood are the materials that most frequently form urban bulky wastes. Following their collection, classification, reuse and separation by industrially protected advanced techniques, such as 3D fragmentation, routes and recovery processes will be developed, thus allowing to obtain high added-value products. In addition, during the project, logistic and social aspects are going to be tackled too, thus encouraging
reusing and implementing educational programmes.
The project, where 20 other entities from seven different countries take part, has received funding from the EU research and innovation programme Horizon 2020 under grant agreement no 690103.
AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Centre, is a non-profit research association located in Valencia (Spain). Its aim is working as a technological partner for companies from the plastics industry and offering them integral and customized solutions by coordinating research, development and innovation projects, as well as technology services.
