Formtech Enterprises extruder of the month

Head offi ce: Founded: Stow, Ohio, USA

CEO: Dave Turk 1970

Ownership: Private

Profi le: Formtech Enterprises is a custom manufacturer of profi le extrusions – which has done since it was established in 1970. In its early days, it also produced foamed PVC mouldings. In the 1980s, it outgrew its original plant in Akron, Ohio and opened in nearby Stow. At this time, the company expanded its operations, moving into twin- screw extrusion and wood-plastic composites.

Product lines: As a custom extruder, Formtech has no catalogue of stock parts. However, it has helped a wide range of customers to develop bespoke components. One example is a wood-plastic composite door surround, which was developed when a customer was experiencing high scrap rates. Formtech designed and produced a new surround using WPCs. Other examples include: a refrigeration bumper line, to refurbish commercial refrigeration cases; and a hybrid sheet piling system, which is fi lled with concrete to create a long-lasting wall for marine and land retention projects.

Factory locations: The company expanded from its original Akron base in 1981, setting up in Stow. This is now the company’s corporate headquarters. There are two manufacturing facilities. In Athens, Georgia, Formtech uses single- and twin-screw extrusion to produce a range of bespoke products. At its Fairview, Pennsylvania location, it processes a range of materials – including PVC, PE, PC and ABS – on single-screw extruders, while also offering tooling services.
