PVC formulations help to raise product quality
Delegates at the recent PVC Formulation conference – held in April in Cologne, Germany, and organised by Applied Market Information – heard how a host of new materials are helping to boost performance. Total Cray Valley has launched a new processing aid
for rigid PVC profi les. Philippe Lodefi er, European R&D director at Cray Valley in France, told delegates that the company’s new lower molecular weight Cleartack resin gave improved thermal stability, better impact strength and good surface quality. It evaluated several formulations – using a standard
acrylic processing aid, or a Cleartack resin. In a fusion test, the Cleartack resins reduced fusion torque (by around 10%), and fusion temperature by up to the same amount. Overall, he said there was a 50% increase in dynamic thermal stability. Dynamic heat stability at 180°C was improved from
around 30 to 50 minutes, which was due to reduced shear heating. Mechanical properties – such as Izod impact and tensile strength – were maintained, while there was a 10% improvement in drop dart perfor- mance. In terms of appearance, there was improved gloss and surface appearance, as well as better weatherability, said Lodefi er. Meanwhile, Benvic has developed what it calls a new generation of thermoplastic alloys for the building

industry. Olivier Bediot, of the company’s R&D tech services centre in France, said that its Thermavic range of PVC materials helps to improve the thermal break performance of window profi les. Its current ER109 range of materials already have a
thermal conductivity of 0.17W/mk, and are available in four colours (black, dark grey, light grey and white). The calcium/zinc based formulations are NF132 certifi ed for outdoor exposure, and developed for assembly with aluminium. However, he said that new materials with greater
heat resistance are needed in order to develop new types of frames for applications such as skylights, conservatories and large windows. Thermavic is a
