CANADA Fresh air in Ontario


Ontario Mushroom Farms, not far from Toronto, has three owners and is surrounded by many neighbours – who were not particularly charmed by the smells associated with composting. But when the new, first indoor composting facility in Ontario started it wasn’t just local residents who

n 1 December 2016, Ontario Mushroom Farms (OMF), owners of the Carlton, Greenwood and Piccioni mushroom farms, organised an open house for local residents. The pressure caused by the ongoing complaints of the local community resulted in a ruling by the provincial authorities that forced the company to invest in a new, indoor composting system. Local residents were confronted on a daily basis by odour emissions from the composting process. A small group of attentive residents searched the internet and discovered that in British Colombia, some 5000 kilometres away, three indoor composting plants had been constructed that no longer released foul odours to the environment. Ammonia emissions have been reduced there to 0%. This local pressure and funding granted by the Province of Ontario authorities (as it was the first indoor composting facility in Ontario), meant OMF could start planning a new plant in


cooperation with GTL from the Netherlands, who provided the engineering.


Quality of life in Canada The federal authorities highly value a good quality of the living environment of all the citizens of Canada. For this reason, companies that pollute the air are subject to strict standards and requirements, certainly in densely popula- ted regions such as Toronto and Vancouver in BC. This problem is not yet such a major concern in the other provinces, as they are much less
