Modernisation through unifi cation

On 16 November 2016, alongside the 10th Chinese Mushroom Days in Zhangzhou, a trip was arranged to visit the Tongfa Group’s demo mushroom farm. This facility is

set to play a significant role in modernising mushroom growing in the region. By Roel Dreve

Capital of canned mushrooms Zhangzhou is considered to be the ‘hometown’ of Chinese mushrooms and the ‘capital of canned edible mushrooms’, but the region’s extensive mushroom sector is still characterised by countless, small-scale, family farms that suffer from low efficiency levels and harvesting capacities, pollution and safety issues. Cultiva- tion is often seasonal, spanning November to February.

The authorities in Zhangzhou have committed to transitioning the agricultural sector in the region to a higher, more modern level. As part of their plans, standardisation of farms is promo- ted. These farms can be built or rented by growers and supplied with raw materials by a number of leading companies.

ongfa Group, one of the principle sponsors of the event in Zhangzhou, was founded in 1992 and operates in various segments of the food,

beverages and canning markets, as well as in trading and R&D activities. The company ranks among the top ten of Chinese canning compa- nies, imports wine and exports canned mushrooms, fruit, vegetables, meat and seafood to more than 60 countries worldwide. In its own words, Tongfa concentrates on securing a safe supply chain from ‘growing room to dining room’ and is proud of its quality assurance certification such as BRC, HACCP, kosher and halal.

Central to these plans are the ‘Five Unification’ operation rules: unified standardised mushroom houses, technical training and guidance, standard substrate, intelligent networking management and product quality standards. Attention is also devoted to traceability and food safety. To encourage this process, the authorities have built demo projects that serve as pioneers in the modernisation process, and large sums have been earmarked for further development.

Tongfa Group Demonstration Base In 2015, a ‘Demonstration Base’ was constructed close to Zhangzhou, representing an investment of 100 million RMB and comprising a compost facility and mushroom farm, which is said to be aiming for daily production of 200 tons. Growers from the region can attend the base for demon- strations and training. The development of a ‘Strain Center’ in cooperation with the Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences is projected for the next phase.
