Prêt-à-porter
To grace the cover of the last edition, I wanted a model wearing the dress made of mushroom mycelium created by Dutch designer Aniela Hoitink. But the garment, made from so-called ‘muskin’, was not wearable yet, so my idea had to be put on the back burner.

That was a pity, as ISMS 2016 we reported on devoted lots of attention to alternative, non- food applications of mushrooms. A particular crowd-puller was Han Wösten’s inspirational key- note presentation. Wösten argued that many more products based on mushroom mycelium can be produced than is now the case. Mycelium, in pure form or as a composite, can be used as a biodegra- dable insulation or packaging material, turned into furniture or textiles. Mycelium as an alternative to replace plastic, or mycelium that digests plastic! There is a long list of positives and advantages to be gained for our eco-system: for example, making just one pair of jeans requires 7000 litres of water, but only 12 litres to produce the mycelium dress. And when your mycelium shoes wear out, simply feed them to the animals!

Ironically, it was Paul Stamets who placed a critical footnote during the conference regarding the com- mercial feasibility of using mycelium as a replace- ment for polystyrene packaging. Stamets, one of the most fervent advocates of alternative applica- tions of mushrooms, pointed out the barriers being thrown up by - in this case - traditional producers of polystyrene packaging, one of them being the lower cost price. In defence, Wösten suggested that the EU can force the industry in Europe to treat the environment with more respect and encourage and steer these innovative applications, which would probably be more difficult in the USA. The non-food experiments using mycelium are part of a broader revolution aimed at more respectful use of the resources on our planet - a movement that is gaining momentum. There are naturally plenty of hurdles ahead for this kind of innovation, but the first aviation pioneers also witnessed their flying machines, or their companies, crash before achieving success. But everyone knew that eventu- ally safe and sustained flight would be possible. And as soon as that dress literally is ‘prêt à porter’, we’ll put Doutzen Kroes wearing it on the cover. Roel Dreve
