new, practical guide to mushroom grow- ing, written by consultant Mark den Ouden and published by Roodbont Publishers, is planned for publication shortly.

‘Mushroom Signals, a practical guide to optimal mushroom growing’, is a hardcover, full colour volume of 144 pages, with various illustrations and photographs on each page to accompany and explain the text. The book will contain at least 450 images. The book will initially be published in English, but Den Ouden hasn’t ruled out a Dutch and eventually Chinese version at a later date. According to the author, the focus is on a practicality. “The primary basis is ‘look-think-act’, in the entire process from phase I composting right up to harvesting. This is where the book departs from reference works written by Leo van Griens- ven and Peter Oei. Their books are less visually focussed. Similar to the other books in Roodbont’s Signals series for the agricultural sector, the content of the book is very practical. More a guide than a reference book, and of course, containing all the latest insights.” Den Ouden mentions assessing compost as an example. “How good compost should actually feel when you squeeze it is equally as impor- tant as the theory behind compost production. The book serves as a source of knowledge, it covers every subject, for everything mush-
rooms growers should know. At the same time, you can’t list all the knowledge there is, otherwise the book would be impossible to read. But it does contain the most important aspects that will help improve the quality of mushroom growing.”
Publication date
The book is planned for release on 1 June 2016, just before the
Dutch Mushroom Days, where it will be on sale for 64.90 euro (incl. 6% VAT). If you are inter- ested in obtaining a copy, you can pre-order until 1 February, or apply to become a sponsor. Companies can place an advertisement, and have the option of ordering copies to present to their business contacts.
Mark den Ouden has been active as a trainer and consultant in the mushroom sector for 15 years, previously at Cpoint, and since he started his own company five years ago at Mushroom Office, where he provides the sector with training and consultancy services. In the words of the author, the book forms ‘a good reflection of that rich experience’. John Peeters, consultant and contributing editor of our mushroom publications, has also cooperated in this project. The translation is being provided by AgroLingua.

The following day local MP, Nigel Huddleston, also enjoyed a tour of the site.

The £2.25m investment sees an additional 1,500m2 to increase the facility by a third. This will allow the com- pany, which employees 120 staff at the site, to increase its mushrooms sales from the current 500 tonnes per week. Part of the investment on the new building included £160k on solar panels which will provide 60% of its electricity requirement. This is in addition to £225k spent on solar panels on the existing building earlier this year. In his speech Padraic O’Leary, MD, commented that ‘the investment was vital for the long term future in order to grow the business that has been in Evesham for over 30 years’ and that the solar power ‘reflects the company’s ethos in supporting sustainable food production and the environment’.
