A particular specialism of Guoxin is manufacturing machines, tanks (in the picture) and systems for the production of liquid spawn.

such as sterilisers, are not exported by Japan and Korea”, says Xu. He is proud of Guoxin’s liquid spawn systems. “The Korean systems require more manual labour, while ours are far more automated. No matter how large your production capacity is, you only need three people to make liquid spawn. It is a completely closed system, with a zero-risk of contamination. On top of that, it is extremely simple to use.” Twelve of Guoxin’s customers, who all produce their own spawn, currently work with the system – to their complete satisfaction. Guoxin not only supplies the system, but can also provide advice and the ingredients.

Bonuses

Xu mentioned some other bonuses offered by the company. “We customise all our systems to suit our customers’ specific wishes, and our price/quality ratio is the best on the Chinese market. And what’s more, contrary to other Chinese suppliers, our huge production capacity and extensive research department mean we can handle large orders.” At present, 800 employees work for the Kuosen Group (120 specifically for Guoxin). Before the company entered the mushroom markets, there were no industrialised mushroom farms in China. Xu: “Growers used primitive methods and systems. After, 2006 exotic mushroom growing was extensively modernised and we were the first company to take the plunge and cultivate erengyii by using liquid spawn tech-

nology.” As well as the advantage of being the first, the – pharmaceutical - synergy with Senoh also played a role in the company’s expansion. “We have benefitted not just from the available expertise, but also from the fact that Senoh has more than 100 points of sale over the country, so we are always close to the customer.”

Strategy

Guoxin has a clear strategy for the coming three years. “More and more factories (notably, this term is more often used here than ‘farms’) abroad are switching from Agaricus production to ‘exotics’, and large Chinese exotic mush- rooms growers with production on wood-based substrates are building factories outside China. That opens up many opportunities for Guoxin”, explains the General Manager. The company wants to develop two markets. “Firstly we want to help develop small farms abroad, for exam- ple for erengyii growing. Secondly, we want to support the large farms mentioned earlier being built outside China” The company also con- tinually implements innovation within its own product line. For example, they are thinking of setting up an Agaricus spawn system for the production of shiitake spawn. ‘A game changing idea’. After our visit, we were introduced to Xu’s father, chairman Xu Shouhai, who founded the company. He told us about a new innovation from Guoxin, but that has to remain a secret for the time being..
