new mixing and filling unit. Just like elsewhere in Brazil, high quality varieties are regularly purchased from abroad.

Obstacles in Brazil Marilyn summarises the current situation in her country as follows: “At the moment mushroom production in Brazil falls short of fulfilling demand, and the main reason is the lack of good quality substrate and compost. That makes it difficult to promote mushrooms in the shops, something which is already hard because of the character of the traditional cuisine here. Fortunately, there is a strong Japanese presence in the Saõ Paulo region, and that makes our work easier. The scarcity of high quality substrate and compost has two

main reasons: a lack of technical knowledge and not enough equipment. The knowledge that we do have is fragmented, and only shared to a limited extent, and the majority of growers do not have climate controlled growing rooms. Brazil is actually in a transitional phase, it has only been a couple of years since funds were released for research and development and technology transfer. On top of this, we are faced by two obstacles: climate change has created more challenging cultivation conditions since 2013 and the unfavourable economic and political climate hinders our imports. But the market is developing strongly, certainly now that a healthy diet is becoming more important. A concerted marketing campaign would give our sector the boost it needs.”

‘Brazil is faced with two

problems, climate change and the economic and political climate’
