The Chinese mushroom growing sector is booming. That was more than apparent during my recent trip to China to attend the Chinese Mushroom Days. The conference was characterised by an open, no-nonsense approach in the lectures and debates. The fact that all the details have to be just right, both construction-wise and in cultiva- tion, was emphasised. There are enough hurdles and challenges ahead, as simply duplicating (‘Dutch’) growing and composting systems is not the answer, neither is inviting ‘the wise men of the west’ a guarantee for the success of an industry that must stand on its own two feet. On our visits to the various farms and companies we saw a number of the issues that have to be solved, such as hygiene, casing soil production or the storage of chicken manure.

But we also spoke with numerous young managers with a keen thirst for knowledge, aware of the importance of looking after the details, and who put the transparency promoted at the conference and a critical attitude towards their own manage- ment into daily practice. This certainly applies to the exemplary enterprise Yuguan, where our jour- ney ended. This company (see MB73) has been the target of plenty of foreign scepticism, as previous huge construction projects turned out to be pie in the sky after completion. But no savings have been made here in the details. If shotcrete was needed, then shotcrete was used, and they only work with reliably good suppliers and advisors. Things are kept simple and well-ordered; the location and marketing channels have been well considered, and consumers notice the superior quality of the mushrooms – and expressly demand it! That easily achieves a price one and half times higher. Of course the road ahead may still be bumpy with problems that simply scattering some salt won’t solve, but this company is clearly choosing for long-term investments. From the rooftop of the offices being built, I saw new office furniture being unloaded below. The sound of music from a funeral on the adjacent plot drifted our way. But gazing out over the gigantic complex, that stretched almost to the horizon, it wasn’t difficult to image that here, at my feet, I was witnessing the birth of a new phase in mush- room growing in China.

Happy Christmas and a wonderful new year!
