Visit to Funghi & Flora
The Brazilian spawn company Funghi & Flora has been active since 1995. But, according to one of the founders of the company, the

here are about six professional spawn producers in Brazil. Funghi & Flora is one of them. The company is based in the town of Valinhos, about 60 kilometres north of Saõ Paulo. Funghi & Flora was one of the organisers of the 8th International Mushroom Symposium in August (see MB72), along with Embrapa and Apta (state-owned research corporations), compost producer Compobras (see MB73), Cogumelos Yuri (substrate, shiitake) and Brasmicel (spawn).
5 to 8 tons per week
Funghi & Flora was founded in 1995 by Marylin Del Nero Grecco and Marcia Akemi Uemura. Initially they produced shiitake spawn, shiitake
substrate and mushrooms and marketed this themselves. In 2005 they switched to exclusively producing spawn and currently employ eight people. They sell spawn of a growing number of varieties, mainly oyster mushrooms, Agaricus brasiliensis, shiitake, shimeji and other exotics. Their customers are substrate suppliers who also produce their own mushrooms. Their customers are located all over the country, and the spawn is normally transported in uncooled lorries, unless it has to travel great distances. The company has at present a capacity of five to eight tons a week, but Marilyn and Marcia aim to double this on the same site within the short term. To realise this they have bought a new autoclave and a steam generator of 150 kg steam/hour and a
