views on three sides, and on one side views of the city from the perspective of the adjacent jazz venue Bimhuis, impressed everyone. A highly contemporary exterior, yet it exudes a stylish and warm atmosphere. With a host of different options, auditoriums and a large atrium and waterside terrace for conference sessions, catering, sponsoring and break-out sessions, although fitting all the parts into the whole will still take some thinking.

The location is perfect, within walking distance of Central Station and Amsterdam city centre, but just outside the main tourist areas, and with parking facilities underneath the Muziekge- bouw. More info: http://zakelijkeevenementen. muziekgebouw.nl/informatie/onze_zalen/ Immediately next to the Muziekgebouw is the Mövenpick hotel. The organisers are looking into arranging discounts with hotels in the locality, but according to Piet Lempens will not be block booking rooms. “In Amsterdam, a tourist mag- net in its own right, there are accommodation options to suit every budget.”

The programme

Merging the Mushroom Days in Den Bosch and the ISMS conference in Amsterdam is clearly a tough challenge, but the organisers appear to have succeeded in drafting a provisional programme intended to unite and reinforce the offerings of both events.

The conference will start on Sunday evening 29 May 2016 with registration and a welcome. The conference proper starts on 30 May and on 31 May coaches will transfer visitors to the south for farm visits and a dinner. The conference programme continues on 1 June, but in the evening visitors can take an optional transfer to the Welcome Event in Den Bosch to celebrate the opening of the Mushroom Days trade event. The trade fair is also open on Thursday 2 June. The proceedings in Amsterdam will close around midday. Attendees can then take the coach to Den Bosch and back to Amsterdam. The pro- gramme for Friday 3 June is just the Mushroom Days. In the words of Lempens, indeed ‘a busy and tightly-scheduled programme’, but with good logistic planning and coach transfers, it is achievable.

The conference

The conference will proceed along the usual lines, with keynote presentations (in the stunning main auditorium), parallel sessions, poster sessions and such like. The working language will be English, but no simultaneous interpreters have been arranged. Johan Baars, together with Anton Sonnenberg responsible for the scientific part of the programme, said when questioned that the 19th conference will differ

slightly to the 18th edition.“There will be greater input from other disciplines and we can expect other scientific applications for mushrooms, and more practical perspectives. In addition, we will ensure that genuinely good research results will be presented.” The first ‘Call for Abstracts’ was issued in mid-June via the ISMS e-newsletter. The trade fair

The Dutch Mushroom Days, the world’s major trade event for suppliers to the mushroom industry, will also follow its familiar pattern in the traditional Brabanthallen venue, with a Wel- come Event and the Ambassador Award. The fair was last held in 2013, when 75 large stands filled the halls. In 2016 a minimum of 2000 visitors are expected, as well as hundreds of attendees of the ISMS conference. The price per square metre for exhibitors is the same as in 2013; 75 euro/m2, excl. VAT. Visitors to the fair have free entry, but not to the conference. Conference attendees do have free entry to the Mushroom Days. For more specifics about the Mushroom Days see: http:// www.champignondagen.nl/nl/index/60-cham- pignondagen_2016

The sponsors

There are a wide range of sponsorship options, including banners in the conference building, promotional material, logo on the ISMS website, conference bags, farm and company visits and an exclusive direct mail campaign. Prices range from 750 (coffee break) to 20,000 euro (Diamond Sponsor). There is also a sponsor area, where companies and organisations can hire a small, show window stand close to the conference halls, to present their activities during the conference. The ISMS distributed a Sponsorship Brochure last week, with full details of all the options.

The organisers are still working out the details of certain parts of the conference, such as farm and company visits and some culinary moments, and hope to count on input and ideas from the sector. Many international companies and potential visitors from all over the world have already shown their interest in the ‘Mushroom Week’, which has the potential to be the biggest event ever organised in the history of our industry. Don’t miss it!
