COMPOST STRUCTURE
Days in 2016 to join the group viewing the venue of the ISMS event, the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ in Amsterdam. During the dinner afterwards, I stepped out to catch a breath of fresh air (which is an advantage Amsterdam has over ‘Beijing 2012’) with ISMS President Greg Seymour, and asked him if he could distil in one sentence what would make this double event a success in his view. Without hesitation, he answered: “When everyone meets.” At first, I found his answer surprising, or even a little too obvious. Surprising, as the principal aim of organising a scientific conference is surely to present top-notch scientific research results: A breakthrough in genetics! Genuine proof that oyster mushrooms have anti-carcinogenic properties!! And obvious, because isn’t ‘meeting’ always the whole point of every event in the sector? But during dessert, I decided that in fact his answer perfectly summed up precisely what the spirit and essence of this ‘Mushroom Week’ in 2016 really is or should be. Uniting and merging the ‘World Cup for Suppliers’, and the ‘Olympic Games of Mushroom Science’ was not the simple matter that some people expected it would be, and in the Netherlands the announcement of Amsterdam as host to the ISMS and the ‘associated’ high frequency of the Mush- room Days led to heated debate. But the parties met in the middle. In 2016, the orbits of these two events will converge and two worlds will meet, creating unique opportunities for network- ing and disseminating and exchanging ideas and research. Add to that Amsterdam’s international allure, a cultural melting pot in its own right, and guests and participants from all corners of the globe, and what you will have in Den Bosch and Amsterdam will be a coming together of ideas and individuals that is of unparalleled stature. It has all the ingredients for a fantastic event. The only thing that could throw a spanner in the works is a lack of sponsorship, or traffic jams on the A2. I really don’t think the motorway will be cordoned off for the ISMS convoys. Now that was and advantage that ‘Beijing’ had!
