MEETING Political climate
On day 1 after the official opening, two lectures were scheduled. The first one was done by Pawel Kowalski, macroeconomics analysis expert who presented the influence of the Rus- sian embargo on the foreign and domestic fruit and vegetable market. The lecture room was almost full, meaning clearly that the subject was of great importance for most participants. The foreign trade analysis proved that the concerns about the embargo and its impact on Polish fruit and vegetable exports were justified. The total export value in 2014 dropped by 7,4% compared to 2013. Because mushroom growing is at the moment the most exported Polish branch (70% of the entire production goes abroad, of which 20% goes to Russia and
5% to Ukraine) every negative development is very quickly experienced by all members of the production chain. The same problems are being felt by all European mushroom producers who are not allowed to export their fresh mush- rooms to Russia and have to manage the surplus of production on their own, so there is not much chance of selling the Polish mushrooms to other EU countries. Part of the export (17%) has been directed to other destinations (Serbia, Egypt, USA, Canada), mainly however to Belarus (the export to this country went up by 9,5% last year), from where the Polish mushrooms reach the Russian market. Russia doesn’t ban processed mushroom products, so there has been a slight increase in the export of preserved mushrooms on that front. The whole boycot
