The vast amount of scientific knowledge, and the speed at which it is being created, demands appropriate structures and networks that allow the application of that new information into the industry. ISMS is attempting to provide a platform for that to occur by being a conduit

for new scientists coming to the industry to tap into existing networks, and provide a banner for international projects where scientists and industry can collaborate to attract funding and undertake multi-discipli- nary projects. The Russian mushroom cruise I attended recently provided a great example of the important role ISMS can play. Not only was I was able to share information from global projects with the audience of growers, scientists, and businesses, I also had the pleasure of hearing about research activities from scientists working in the region. These scientists are now linked into ISMS global networks and some will become colla- borators on existing projects. Not only do the scientists and the projects benefit, but the industries they work with have access to new informa- tion more quickly. Another example occurred just last week when researchers at Penn Sta- te in the US and Sydney University linked up for the first time to discuss collaboration on international scholarships and projects for internatio- nal students. Although not planned, the conversation concluded with an arrangement for closer collaboration on independent research projects on composting. The US and Australian industry will be the immediate beneficiaries but ultimately the global industry will be better off when the projects are concluded. This is just one of many outcomes that ISMS is dedicated to pursuing on behalf of the mushroom world.

ISMS Congress 2012 Things are coming together nicely for the 18th ISMSC in fascinating Beijing, China on August 26-30, 2012. This event will be the highlight for the mushroom indus- try internationally next year. The main purpose of this Congress is to promote the development of mushroom industry as well as to present the latest developments. In addition to the scientific communication, new varieties, new products, new technolo- gies and latest publications will be showcased. The theme of the Congress is Mushroom and Health, which will focus on (I) The development and prospect of industrial situation; (II) Production and technology; (III) Nutrition and health. The Congress will consist of keynote lectures, plenary sessions, oral and poster presentations. Key note speakers will include Dr. Anton Sonnenberg (Breeding for the Future), Dr. Shiuan Chen (Protective effects of Agaricus bisporus), Prof. Yu Li (Chinese mushroom industry) and Dr. Ian R. Hall (Mycorrhizal mushrooms). Farm visits are planned to the Tongzhou District on August 29. The 18th Congress will be held at Beijing International Convention Center (BICC), which is located close to the main venue of the 2008 Olympic Games and touristic highlights. This is an event not to be missed, so get it in your diary and make sure you’ll be part of it!

d like to end with an example from practice. A grower has noticed a bubble infection that is continuing to spread, but he is not having any trouble with insects. On peak days during har- vest, the pickers and the lorries return to the 1st flush after dealing with the 2nd or 3rd flush. “That’s what we always do” explains the grower. Precisely, get the clue?

Hygiene on mushroom farms and tunnel plants is a regular topic of these tips. And not without good reason. There are still gains to be made here by all companies. Some involve just a few weak links in the chain, while others have long list of improvement points which means carefully prioritising which items must be tackled first. Spray cleaning, disinfecting, transport of machines and equipment, etc. often become routine tasks which is precisely where the danger lies. This is certainly the case when diseases like bubble (verticillium), cobweb mould (dactylium) or green mould have been absent for a lengthy period. It is at times like this that complacency takes hold and attention to hygiene can slip. But walking routes, clothing, spawn storage, packaging, insects, closing doors firmly, filters and communication are all aspects where mistakes are easily made in practice. If an infection raises its ugly head again, everyone has to be on their toes and apply the right corrective measures. Alarm bells should start ringing at once. Practice shows that growers and farm managers do not always take the right course of action, and in many cases only respond once the infection has already taken hold. Inspecting and discipline are important here, but consider running a hygiene scan of the entire company. A fresh pairs of eyes sees more than you think. Tunnel companies are advised to measure the spore pressure regularly, but on growing farms too taking air samples and contact prints can provide the extra insight you need. I’

developments and the science of mushrooms and to stimulate exchange of new ideas between growers and scientists around the world. ISMS sponsors a major international congress on mushrooms, which is held every 3-5 years. Other events are endorsed and supported by ISMS working with national committees. The Society is governed by a council which includes a member appointed by each Corporate Member and six members elected by ballot of the individual members. The Council elects the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, as well as the past president to be the Executive Com- mittee.
