LONG TIME AGO IN A FAR AWAY COUNTRY, MY LOVING FATHER wanted a green Christmas tree, of pine or fi r, for
his kids. Unfortunately, this mission was very diffi cult to fulfi ll in Japan, a country whose taste in trees ran to aluminum — in bright “holiday” colors like hot pink or bright blue. Every year, my father paid a small for- tune for a cut tree, after much negotiating and fi nally convincing a farmer that yes, he did in fact want to buy and cut down a beautiful pine. One year, he came home with a little potted tree
about 18 inches high. We laughed and laughed at our “Charlie Brown” tree, but my mother draped a holiday tablecloth on a small table, we set the tree on it and hung as many ornaments as we could. With the tinsel added, you could barely see any part of the little tree. Presents were placed on the fl oor and Christmas was wonderful. After Christmas, my mother said “Oh well, it will
probably die but we’ll put it out in the garden and enjoy it as long as possible.” The little tree did not die; it grew taller, and the next year we brought it in again. Same story, same
garden — the tree did not die and it grew some more. The third year, the little tree needed a bigger pot.
In and out again. And again. The tree grew too big for the table and my brother and Dad worked together to bring it in the house. It was repotted for the third time. Several years later when I was in college, I got a
letter from Dad. “Hi sweetheart, guess what? We have a new tree. Mom decided the old one deserved to be in the ground, so she planted it in the garden.” When my parents retired and moved back to the
U.S., 13 years after that fi rst Christmas, the tree was still thriving.
