NE HUNDRED YEARS AGO THIS MONTH, THE EDITOR OF THIS MAGAZINE WROTE A “Yuletide Greeting.” Read the entire greeting on page 106 of this is-

sue. I thought this comment was worth repeating, “In this issue we have tried to inject a little of the Christmas spirit, in the hope that you may forget, for a few moments at least, your business cares and worries, and again enjoy the treasured memories of childhood days, when Christmas to you perhaps meant more than it does today.” A lot of cattle industry activities will start early next year — stock

show season begins and industry groups will hold annual meetings. The Texas Legislature will convene in Austin next month. I suspect many of our members will be spending many hours planning and preparing for January and early 2017 events. Everyone knows I’m an advocate for planning. In fact, this issue con-

tains an article by Larry Stalcup on planning for generational transfer of the ranch. He urges us to start those conversations earlier rather than later. I’d add one more thing to plan this holiday month. Plan time to enjoy

the season. There’s important work to be done in the New Year, but pre- serve some time this month to contemplate the year gone by, to enjoy the view of cattle in the pasture, to laugh at the antics of children (yours or someone else’s). If you are lucky enough to have them around, celebrate the generations of your family and friends who gather for the season. Share a meal, share stories, share memories. We want to thank the members of TSCRA for supporting your associa-

tion and magazine with your input and suggestions and your continu- ing membership. Thank you for sharing this magazine with family and ranch friends. Thank you for advertising in The Cattleman and allowing us to carry your message to Cattle Raisers. It is our privilege to carry the news of our community, the knowledge of our industry experts and your important messages to the members. I wish you all a holiday season full of joy, a Merry Christmas and a

Happy New Year.
