When acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) took the world by surprise in the 1980s, it sparked a swarm of health-education posters not seen since wartime warnings of the risks of foreign encounters. The rush of output by health providers, governments
and design agencies is evidenced by the sheer number of posters relating to AIDS and HIV in the Wellcome Library (close to 3000, from 99 countries). Russia, China and most Middle Eastern countries are notably not represented.
