‘A Medical Missionary Attending to a Sick African’
‘A Medical Missionary Attending to a Sick African’ Oil on canvas Harold Copping, 1916 RRa0001 / 535948i Wellcome Library
Commissioned by the London Missionary Society in 1916, this depiction of a western medical man at work in Africa was used to publicise the organisa- tion’s activities. It shows a traditional local treatment
cast to one side in favour of a remedy taken from the missionary’s travelling medicine box, which bears a striking resemblance to the Tabloid medicine chests supplied to explorers by Burroughs Wellcome.
