Louis Vuitton returns to America’s Cup in expand- ed role
By The Associated Press
French luxury goods giant Louis Vuitton is returning to the America’s Cup, this time as pre- senting sponsor of the match as well as title sponsor of the America’s Cup World Series and the challenger eliminations. Louis Vuitton, who had been sponsoring the challengers’ trials since 1983, pulled out over con- cerns that the sailing event had become too commercial. “The new America’s Cup rules define a more commercial approach, and the signed proto- col has already been questioned by some of those concerned.
to a cruise position with an active tilting suspension sys- tem implemented in the front and the rear. The rear ski is attached to a
horizontal jet pump powered by a 650cc engine. The front skis are designed to cut through waves offering riders a fast — yet smooth — riding experience. Unlike conventional water-
craft relying on a directional water jet to steer, the Jet Blade is unique because the jet is fixed and is steered by turning the front skis. The tilt suspen- sion system allows both skis to
Indeed, there is a risk of a signifi- cant reduction in the number of participating teams,” the compa- ny said in a statement on July 13, 2007.
“In these conditions, Louis
Vuitton has decided not to lend its name to the next Challenger selection series.” After Oracle Racing won the
33rd America’s Cup for the Golden Gate Yacht Club in the 2010 Deed-of-Gift race against Alinghi, Louis Vuitton again spon- sored the challenger series for the 34th America’s Cup which was held in 2013 on San Francisco Bay.
Some had questioned whether the luxury goods com- pany would return for 2017 in Bermuda after a star-crossed regatta in 2013 in San Francisco. The sponsorship arrangement was announced on May 27. The Luis Vuitton America’s
Cup World Series begins in Portsmouth, England, July 23-26.

JFK’s sailboat fails to sell at auction
DALLAS (LOG NEWS SERVICE) — A sailboat once owned and raced by President John F. Kennedy has failed to sell at auction in Dallas. Heritage Auctions says that the Star Class sailboat named Flash II failed to meet the con- signer’s reserve on the boat of $100,000. Failing to generate any bids during the auction on May 18 Heritage Auctions put Flash II up for sale on its website for $305,000 — three times the starting price at the auction. The 22-foot sailboat, which was built in 1930, was owned and raced by the future president and his older brother, Joseph P. Kennedy, from 1934 through 1940. After Kennedy sold the boat it

The boat was seized by the
U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in 2004 and even- tually put up for auction in 2005. The sailboat’s most recent
owner is a Houston man who purchased the boat at the gov- ernment auction. Mark Prendergast of Heritage has said the boat had been painstakingly restored. He said, “Not only is it a piece of American history, it’s also seawor- thy and ready for adventure.”
