DWYC hosts 2015 annual Charity Regatta
By Ambrosia Brody
DANA POINT — Dana West Yacht Club will continue its annual tradition of hosting a Charity Regatta, which raises funds for several local non- profits, from June 5-7 in Dana Point Harbor.
The annual event is held
over the course of three days and benefits Dana Point’s 5th Marine Regiment Support Group and Art & Creativity for Healing. This year marks the regatta’s 18th
year run. “Dana West Yacht Club has a long- standing tradition of supporting our military, especially those from Camp Pendleton, through our Holiday Armed Forces Dinners and golf tour- naments,” said Dana West YC Commodore Tim Randall. “We are extremely excited to extend our sup- port this year to the Dana Point 5th Regiment Support Group and Art & Creativity for Healing.” The three-day regatta, to be held off the coast of Dana Point Harbor, will be open to both PHRF and Cruiser class- es. The June 5 race is a course from
Newport Beach to Dana Point and open to PHRF and Cruising classes. A wine tasting and music will be provid- ed at 6 p.m. at the club. The June 6 race consists of two
Buoy Races for the PHRF class entries and one Random Leg Race for cruises. A Dinghy Poker Run, junior sailing and a silent auction will also be held. The regatta will conclude with all
boats racing a Random Leg Race on June 7. An awards ceremony and music are also scheduled. “We look forward to fun, competi-
tive races, a great auction, and donat- ing all the proceeds to these worthy organizations,” Randall said. Race entry forms and information
on the regatta can be found online at

Long Beach Police win 2015 Heroes Regatta By Rick Roberts
LONG BEACH — City of Long Beach police officer Johnny Dodson and his “Police 3” team won the second annual Heroes Regatta on May 23, hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club and raced on the club’s fleet of Catalina 37s to honor local first responders in the community. A beautiful spring day greeted the teams with man- ageable breezes of 8-12 knots. Dodson gave credit to his key coaches Chris Macy and Steve Comstock and com- mented on the regatta. “This was an amazing experience,” Dodson said, “one
that we are proud to be a part of.” Dodson recognized his teammates Toby Benskin,
Larry Fleet and Christopher Zamora and his entire team for their hard work today. “There were a lot of people involved in this,” Dodson
said. “They were all very helpful and made everything safe.”
The event was created by Long Beach YC’s Yachting
Committee who three years ago created a similar regatta, the Patriot Regatta, honoring all branches of the U.S. mil- itary with service members actually sailing these sleek race boats. Members of Long Beach YC felt local first responders should also be honored with their own regatta. Last year’s inaugural regatta was won by the Long Beach Fire Department Lifeguards. Regatta chairperson Judy Meyer passionately supports
first responders and sees this regatta as one way to show support for members of local fire and police depart- ments.
When asked for her thoughts on the Heroes Regatta,
Meyer simply said, “This is the best way I know how to say, thank you.”
Ten teams evenly split between five Long Beach Police Department teams and five Long Beach Fire Department teams, made up of firefighters and lifeguards, raced with their skilled coaches who supervised and advised when needed.
