Rose, a replica of an 18th century Royal Navy frigate that cruised the American coast dur- ing the Revolutionary War, purchased by 20th Century Fox in 2001 to be used as the HMS Surprise in the 2003 feature film “Master & Commander: Far Side of the World.” His presenta- tion includes motion picture footage of the passage. The event is free and open to the public. Cocktail hour begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by light dinner before the presentation.

The Rose Cup June 17-21 • The Rose Cup at Balboa Yacht Club will be the National Championship for Youth Match Racing in the U.S. Twelve teams of racers ages 16 - 21 will compete in the Gov. Cup 21 boats with three or four in each of the 12 teams. Racing can be viewed from the beach or from one of the spectator boats. Dave Perry, Chairman of the US Sailing Match Racing Committee, will provide train- ing for the racers. The top three teams will be invited to the presti- gious Balboa YC Governor’s Cup to be held July 20-25, racing in the same Gov. Cup 21 boats.

San Diego Wooden Boat Festival scheduled for Father’s Day weekend


SAN DIEGO —The 25th annual San Diego Wooden Boat Festival is the ideal place to spend Father’s Day for those dads who appreci- ate classic vessels. More than 70 boats will be dis- play at the Koehler Kraft boatyard, June 20-21. As the premier annual


event for Southern California traditional wooden boat enthusiasts, the festival provides a rare oppor- tunity for the public to view classic crafts up close from rowing, sailing, and power boats to regal schooners and rugged workboats. Several large classic boats will be at the show with some open for boarding and viewing. Owners will also be on site to answer questions and provide history of the boats. Featured events include, America’s Cup skipper


Dennis Connor’s 40-foot schooner, FAME, which was built in 1910 and restored at Koehler Kraft. Akamia, a 1962 Kettenburg 50 that recently underwent a full


restoration at the boatyard; a new re-construction project for the boatyard, Siwash, a 1910 yawl; and, a returning favorite, the 1928 10-meter class sloop, Sally. The festival will also include


free steamboat rides, custom- made small boats such as kayaks, canoes and dories, ven-


dor booths and a sail down memory lane complete with a photo museum. There will be a children’s area devoted to fun age appropriate activities and live music will also be provided. The event’s proceeds will benefit Challenged Sailors San Diego, an organization providing thera- peutic and recreational adaptive sailing opportuni- ties for people with disabilities. The San Diego Wooden Boat Festival will be
