close June 6 and an award cere- mony will be held the following day. However, there have been some noteworthy catches dur- ing the 36-day derby, including a 45-pound white seabass reeled in by an angler near Mission Beach. Angler Josh Levine hit the jackpot his first day fishing in the derby, catching the 45 pounder just before 6 p.m. on May 20. According to Yellowtail Derby organizer John Campbell, Levine reeled in the seabass with a 50-pound test with live bait and mackerel while aboard a kayak. Question: What kind of knot do you prefer to use and why?
Capt. Louis Zimm:
My favorite knot is the Rapala Knot. I use it to tie on all my saltwater flies and of course, Rapalas as well as Mega-Baits. It allows the fly or the lure to swing freely without restric- tion from the knot and line. Easy to tie as well!
Capt. Louis Zimm is a board member with San Diego Fly Fishers and president of San Diego Yacht Club Anglers. He also has experience as a fishing vessel captain.
