TRAINING & EDUCATION

A floor stripper that can remove different materials usually has variable speed options for different types of flooring. The operator needs to understand which speed is appropriate for each tiling job. For example, ceramic tiles fixed with epoxy mortar are notoriously difficult to remove but, by slowing down the floor stripper, the operator can remove the tiles effectively without damaging the material underneath.

DAMAGE Perhaps the most troublesome consequence of poor equipment understanding is the possibility of incorrect surface preparation or floor damage, leading to project failure. Using the wrong floor stripper for an application or operating the equipment incorrectly will slow a project down. This may be because the operator is not able to remove the material at all or because removal is taking longer than usually.

“IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING PURCHASING A RIDE-ON FLOOR STRIPPER,

REMEMBER THAT THEY CAN BE DIFFICULT TO TRANSPORT OR USE ON MULTI-STOREY PROJECTS.”

project where there is a basement or a second storey with no lift, a ride-on scraper can be extremely efficient on the ground floor, but it will be tricky for the operator to transport it to any of the other floors.

Attending a training session can open your eyes to the power of well designed, high-quality smaller scrapers. Aside from a wiser investment decision, picking the right equipment for the job is also important to avoid damaging the floor. Once the equipment has been selected, it is important for the operator to use the equipment correctly in order to remove a tiled floor efficiently.

EQUIPMENT USE Being able to adapt the pitch and angle of the floor stripper blade, as well as the floor stripper speed, results in a more effective floor removal process overall. Some floor strippers are more like ramming tools that use force to remove flooring. This technique is often unsuitable and can create problems for the operator, the floor stripper and the floor underneath the material that is being removed.

National Flooring Equipment’s floor strippers can change the pitch and angle of the blade, allowing the operator to insert the blade underneath the floor material, change the angle and then effortlessly lift the material off the floor. This allows contractors to speed up the removal of tricky ceramic tiles.

In the worst-case scenario, the floor stripper could tear up the concrete subfloor, leaving the contractor with an expensive mistake to correct. Thankfully, these mistakes can easily be avoided, even by inexperienced contractors, as long as they have a good understanding of the equipment.

EQUIPMENT TRAINING Despite the importance of surface preparation equipment training before removing a tiled floor, many contractors and distribution networks are unsure of how to access training materials. For those in this position, National Flooring Equipment offers in-person group training in multiple locations across the globe.

The hands-on training allows end-users to get to grips with the equipment until they are confident they can perform jobs successfully and efficiently. Operators can also learn how to increase equipment lifespan through upkeep and maintenance.

Complementary to its in-person training sessions, National Flooring Equipment boasts an extensive online video training library that users can access on its website free of charge.

Ultimately, return on investment with surface preparation equipment comes with good equipment understanding and correct equipment use, leading to efficiency on the job. This means contractors can avoid costly errors and ensure every project runs as smoothly as possible.
