LAB DESIGN SPECIAL FOCUS

specifically help organisations benefit from collaboration will be paramount to your LotF vision.

“There is a great desire to employ the latest

technologies to usher today’s

laboratories into the future”

The LotF needs technology and data management systems that balance this requirement for openness with protection and also allow for conversations to happen in real-time. This can be facilitated by adopting familiar elements of communication from social media such as comments and user-centric landing pages.

Lastly, ergonomics and mobility plays an important role in the LotF as well. Previously, the importance of laboratory ergonomics was often overlooked or overshadowed by new technology, but now the environment of the laboratory is widely discussed, as even minor changes in setup have been shown to produce better outcomes than using technology alone. While this approach has traditionally focused on the physical set up of the laboratory, the increased use of mobile devices has had a significant impact on the way scientists operate. Mobile devices alone are not necessarily the answer: what is right for one laboratory researching inorganics materials might not be suitable for another laboratory researching smart foods. The key to creating the LotF is to give scientists access to the best interface tailored to their research starting from the perspective of the bench.

Science is developed by scientists, and the LotF can enable discoveries from breakthrough to implementation. Ultimately, vendors

need to provide technology that allows scientists to leverage their capabilities to manage their LotF strategy. Despite different scientific sectors striving for different goals, they all share a common theme: innovation. The Lab of the Future and the role that technology plays in these breakthroughs is something all scientists should embrace. The LotF is not just about finding a use for new technology – it is about driving best practices in data management and transforming the laboratory to keep inline with the rapid pace of change while embracing innovation and the needs of the end-user.
