SOLUTIONS The floor finish has a significant impact on the safety levels of both commercial and industrial facilities, as if it cracks or fails then it could pose both a slip and contamination risk to visitors, staff and consumers alike.


Thick polyurethane floor coatings, such as Flowfresh from Flowcrete UK, are ideal at creating a safe environment for the long term, in even the most intensive working conditions.


The ability to reduce the risk of liquids and spillages turning into slip hazards is central to this. Anti-slip aggregates can be broadcast into a Flowfresh finish to enhance traction underfoot. The slip resistance can be tailored depending on demand, as rooms where water can be walked in from outside, locations where there is a high chance of spillages, zones that are frequently cleaned or wet processing areas will all need a floor that won’t become slip hazard.

Traditional string mops can be used for dealing with this type of incident. However, they hold a large amount of liquid, making them heavy to use. In addition, wet mopped floors can take up to 10 minutes to dry fully, which increases the risk of slips and falls as well as delivering an inconsistent cleaning performance.


Even after laundering, traditional mops may still contain dirt and bacteria, increasing the risk of cross contamination.


Chicopee’s microfibre mops can be attached quickly and easily to the mopping tool, so spills can be dealt


with quickly and efficiently. The microfibre design acts like a magnet, trapping dirt and bacteria. The mop can be simply removed and discarded after use, eliminating the danger of spreading germs.


The mopping tool has a built-in reservoir that can hold up to 620ml of cleaning fluid, and users can pull the trigger mechanism to release more fluid if required.


In addition, because liquid is only dispensed when it is needed, the total amount of chemicals used is substantially reduced. This method of damp-mopping means floors dry far more quickly than when a traditional string mop is used.

When determining a floor’s anti-slip profile it is important to consider the cleaning regime, as coarsely textured finishes are harder to clean than smoother surfaces. For facilities where both heavy slip resistance and ease of cleaning are critical it becomes a case of balancing these two factors.
