LONE WORKER PROTECTION
LONE WORKER SAFETY EXPO IS COMING TO LONDON
We find out more about the latest lone worker protection event coming to London’s Olympia in March this year.
Let’s start off with a few questions:
• Are you complying with your legal responsibilities for your lone workers?
• Have you clearly identified those employees that lone work within your business?
• Are you confident that you have assessed the risks associated with lone working?
• Have you implemented an effective lone working policy and control measures?
• Are you happy that your lone workers have had adequate, appropriate training?
• Do you have a system in place to allow lone workers to communicate quickly and easily if in difficulty?
Unless you can confidently answer all of the above with a ‘Yes’ you may want to visit the Lone Worker Safety Expo at Olympia on 28th March.
Recognised as the key event in the UK for organisations to learn about the latest developments and best practice for managing lone worker risks, the conference and exhibition brings together respected speakers and experts under one roof.
One of the organisers, Nicole Vazquez from Worthwhile Training, shared her reasons for getting involved in the Expo: “We know in the UK that there are an estimated 6.8million workers and yet my experience tells me that they are not always identified or given the attention or support they need. Sometimes organisations recognise the benefits of using lone workers; allowing flexible working, cost saving and greater utilisation of resources, but they forget to address the additional risks it may bring.

“The ethos of the whole event is to provide guidance and support for those responsible for the safety of lone and remote workers in a straightforward practical way. Having a conference and exhibition running simultaneously means there is plenty of opportunity to network with specialists who are there to help.”
This year the conference will begin with a presentation from Lukas Rootman, Partner at Nabarro, a commercial law firm. His presentation will concentrate on the legal responsibilities of employers and the impact of the changes to the Health and Safety sentencing guidelines.
He will be followed by expert speakers talking about ways to ensure effective policies, using practical tools for completing robust risk assessments, innovative ways to design and deliver high-impact training and the latest thinking on solutions for managing violence and aggression.
The conference programme also includes Dr Tim Marsh, the highly respected world authority on behavioural safety and safety leadership. Tim will be speaking about why lone workers don’t always behave in the way we would want or expect and how we can best influence this. The title of his talk begins ‘Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll…” and will no doubt be interactive.
Nicole added: “We really want to ensure that the delegates are fully engaged and get answers to the questions they walk through the door with. This year we have planned question and answer sections during presentations and a new ‘Ask the Experts’ event at the end of the afternoon. Delegates will have the opportunity to either ask their questions direct or post them for the chair to ask on their behalf.”
Alongside the conference, the exhibition at Olympia will showcase the best in suppliers of lone worker systems, personal protective equipment, training and support.
Leading providers of technological solutions and lone worker systems will also be on hand this year to demonstrate how they can help minimise the risks to both lone and remote workers. This is an area that has grown hugely over the past few years and often organisations find it challenging to find the best fit for their lone working roles.
Nicole concludes: “There are solutions available whether your lone workers are customer facing, remote working or carrying out high risk activities. With all the key players in one place, delegates will be able to compare what is available and gain valuable advice on how to implement an effective solution.”
