ALWAYS USE PROTECTION

Working in a noisy environment every day won’t lead to immediate hospitalisation, but it could rob you of your hearing. Auritech outlines what you need to know when choosing hearing protection.

Hearing damage can occur when sound registers at 85 decibels or over, so those working in loud factories or with certain tools and machinery need to be protected.

Since the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, employers have been held responsible for their workers’ hearing protection. Noise- induced deafness is irreversible, so hearing protection is essential in many environments. Hearing impairment does not happen overnight – it is generally the result of incremental damage over a period of time. For employees at risk of hearing damage, there are two types of hearing protectors available – universal fit and custom fit.

Universal fit protectors have been developed by audiology experts over 20 years and are designed to fit anyone’s ear. Choosing a brand with ceramic sound filters ensures maximum protection from dangerous levels of noise in work or factory environments. At the same time, the wearer can listen to surrounding conversations without experiencing a muffled effect.

Custom fit hearing protectors are considered to be more comfortable and effective hearing protectors. They are created by qualified

technicians that take an accurate mould of each ear canal. From the moulds, the technicians produce a pair of protectors from hard UV- treated material or soft medical- grade silicone that is then protected in a hypoallergenic coating. Patented acoustic attenuation ceramic filters are then secured inside each protector. They are guaranteed to offer the perfect fit and typically last for five years.

Custom fit hearing protectors offer the best fit for any ear and are hypoallergenic, unlike other ear plugs on the market which can often cause ear infections due to frequent removal and replacement. Custom fit hearing protectors guarantee that the user can converse and use the telephone without needing to remove the protectors from their ears.

Alex Duggan, managing director at Auritech UK, commented: “We’ve employed a dedicated specialist to work alongside businesses who are based in a factory environment or those whose employees are regularly using loud machinery where we have seen a huge increase in demand for our universal fit and custom fit hearing protectors.

“We find most customers purchase universal fit protectors, followed by

purchasing custom fit a year or so later as they have been impressed by the product resulting in them having the confidence to invest in the future of their hearing.”

“SINCE THE CONTROL OF NOISE AT WORK REGULATIONS 2005, EMPLOYERS HAVE BEEN HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR WORKERS’ HEARING PROTECTION.”

He added: “We have created the first and only hearing protectors that are able to position a precision sound filter deeply into the hearing channel of the ear. This ensures that the maximum level of sound waves reaching your eardrum is first filtered.

“Factories and work machinery often produce noise levels up to 120dB. Permanent hearing damage can occur from 85dB so it is essential to always use hearing protection.”
