PPE & WORKWEAR

TREADS ON TRIAL Putting a selection of Dr. Martens industrial boots to the test at GalGael were workshop manager, Alasdair Watson (Kestrel), workshop stewards Nori Anderson (Heath ST) and Martin Campbell (Forge ST) and apprentice boat builder, Catherine Weir (Kestrel).

On receiving the boots, the team was impressed by their overall look, durability and quality feel. Workshop steward Nori Anderson commented: “The boots looked great and made standing for long periods more bearable. Previously I’d had problems with steel toe caps rubbing against my toes and causing discomfort but the Heath ST boots were of much higher quality, requiring minimal time to wear in.”

Workshop manager, Alasdair Watson, also commented on the styling, comfort and high level of protection offered by his Kestrel boots. He explained: “I’ve always worn lace up boots at work so the Kestrel boot’s slip-on design was a first for me. The style and fit of my footwear is really important as I’m on my feet all day. The Kestrel is a good looking boot and provided excellent grip and toe protection in the yard, particularly in icy and wet conditions.”

This positive response was mirrored by apprentice boat builder, Catherine Weir, who found her Kestrel boots easy to pull on and off quickly. She noted: “This makes it a much safer option for those, like me, who find it cumbersome to frequently lace up and untie their work boots. I am more likely to wear protective steel toe caps now, even for short periods, because they are so easy to put on.”

“THERE IS

SIGNIFICANT RISK OF THE FOOT BEING

STRUCK OR CRUSHED BY FALLING OBJECTS, CAUGHT UNDER

MOVING VEHICLES OR IN MACHINERY.”

Workshop steward, Martin Campbell required a boot that could stand up to the wear and tear of the everyday workshop environment, including tough manual handling jobs and outside yard work. Selecting a boot with strong British heritage and great styling was also a high priority. He found the Forge boots “instantly comfortable, with first class waterproofing in all extremities”. He added: “They were much better quality than other safety boots I have been issued for work in the past and offered a strong and reliable fit.”
