NOTHING TOO MUCH TROUBLE
FOR LIFT SAFE Materials handling equipment specialist Lift Safe has worked with 163-year-old company Holland’s Pies to greatly reduce manual handling.
Famous for its rich, tasty fillings, traditional baking methods and unique shortcrust pastry, Holland’s uses fresh British ingredients to make up its classic savoury selection, which is delivered daily from its Lancashire- based factory to retailers, chip shops and football stadiums across the UK.
Following a series of manual handling assessments, Holland’s Pies, which employs over 300 people, identified the need to reduce, and ideally eliminate, the risk of manual handling to avoid injuries and musculoskeletal disorders caused by lifting heavy equipment.
EVAC+CHAIR WINS ‘MOST INTERACTIVE
STAND’ AWARD Birmingham based Evac+Chair International wowed the crowds and won an award for ‘Most Interactive Stand’ at the Health & Safety Event held at the NEC on 24th to 26th March 2015.
The Evac+Chair stand comprised the Emergency Bus – a fully customised double-decker bus which housed a
Lift Safe supplied the company with eight handling machines, including two 90kg capacity reel lifters; a stainless steel 125 kg lifter with stainless steel forks to raise sterilised tubs of cubed beef onto stainless steel trolleys; and an electric truck lift for pallets containing trays of pies to allow them to be put into glazing machines at waist height.
Jason Clark, Health & Safety Manager at Walter Holland, explained: “Working with our colleagues and Lift Safe we have come up with significant improvements in this area. Operators can now stack the trays from waist height, so there is no longer any need for excessive bending and lifting.”
He added: “Holland’s Pies continues to look at ways to improve our operations – it’s an ongoing process. We want to carry on producing the best pies for another 163 Years.”

On-board was a variety of emergency solutions including patient transportation equipment from ParAid Medical, the CardiAid Automated External Defibrillator and the Sigma Smart+Guard range of call point protective covers. As well as a trip around the bus, visitors were able to take part in a treasure hunt for a chance to win a CardiAid AED.

HAND ON HEART LAUNCHES UK HEART SAFE AWARDS
Hand on Heart has launched the UK Heart Safe Awards 2015 at the Midland Hotel in Manchester. In conjunction with headline sponsor Physio Control, the event will recognise the achievements of individuals and organisations across the UK in their efforts to become “heart safe”.
Hand on Heart is a registered charity that has 3 main objectives:
• To raise awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in young people
• To provide or fund defibrillators for schools
• To educate young people about SCA and train them in Basic Life Support and to use defibrillators
Victoria Burrows, Chief Executive of Hand on Heart, commented: “This will be my first awards evening as Chief Executive of Hand on Heart. Previous evenings have been a huge success and I am looking forward to this year’s event being even better. I would encourage everyone to consider nominating and joining us on the evening to celebrate the UK’s leading Heart Safe individuals and organisations.”
