CLEANING & HYGIENE

RAT IN MI KITCHEN

Pests are not only a nuisance to your business, but they can also be harmful to health. Learn how to spot a pest problem before it spirals out of control, advises Emma Gilroy, Digital Marketing Manager at Direct 365.

All too often pest control measures are only taken when it is too late and problems have already begun. Businesses need to think ahead and try to prevent such instances occurring in the first place. To protect yourself against any nasty infestations, you should ensure that the business is cleaned regularly (especially any food waste) and small holes and cracks are filled up. Failing that, here’s what you need to look out for.

BED BUGS Bed bugs can be a stubborn problem for anyone who isn’t an insect control specialist, as they have become immune to certain pesticides. Contrary to the name, these tiny creatures can create a huge issue by living in carpets, sofas, cushions and of course beds, which means they can plague any business.

There are two immediate signs that you have a bed bug infestation. The first is when there is a sickly sweet smell coupled with a dark staining of the furnishings and the second is when you notice tiny blood stains left on your mattress – these are caused by the bugs sucking blood from you while you sleep. If you notice any of these signs, call a pest control specialist who knows how to correctly deal with a bed bug problem immediately.

Bed bugs are a pain but they cause more discomfort than real harm. Everybody reacts differently to the insects, as some people develop a rash all over their bodies while others notice swellings and bite

marks. Whatever the symptoms are, don’t leave them untreated – seek professional help.

COCKROACHES A customer seeing a cockroach at your premises is never a good sign. As well as being bad for business, spotting a lone cockroach typically indicates that there is a much bigger problem elsewhere.

“WHEN COCKROACHES FIND THEIR WAY INTO FOOD PREPARATION

AREAS THEY CAN CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE

AND A HUGE RISK TO HUMAN HEALTH.”

Cockroaches can carry all sorts of dangerous bacteria which can spread to humans, such as salmonella, dysentery, gastroenteritis and more. When these tough insects find their way into food preparation areas they can cause serious damage and a huge risk to human health. Signs of cockroaches include a pungent sweet smell that can cause asthma-like symptoms, tiny oval- shaped eggs behind furniture and black spots of faecal matter dotted around the vicinity.

Cockroaches are notorious for being extremely difficult to kill. They can go up to 45 minutes without breathing, live up to a week without a head and even survive a nuclear blast. If you suspect

you have a cockroach problem, do not try to tackle it yourself. Call an industry expert who can eliminate your pest problem as soon as possible.

RODENTS It’s commonly known that it only takes one pair of rodents to make their way into your home before you have thousands of the creatures infesting your property. Research has indicated that 25% of people in the UK are terrified of rats and mice, therefore it only takes a sighting of one little visitor to put off a quarter of your potential customers.

In addition to inducing fear in a lot of people, rats and mice can carry a variety of diseases. The underside of a rat is soaked in urine and they can carry serious diseases such as salmonella and typhus. These can be life threatening to humans, which is why it is vital that you act quickly to remove the problem from your premises.

Bite marks, droppings, scraps of shredded insulation and an ammonia- like smell are all tell-tale signs that you might need to call pest control. Pest control doesn’t have to include extermination, by using a specialist service you can eradicate your problem in a humane way. Some services use repellents, state-of-the- art humane traps and even sniffer dogs to hunt out an infestation and get those rodents off the scene.
