Onboard safety is a key priority for the offshore oil and gas industry but this is increasingly challenging as installations move further offshore. Advanced fire protection systems are critical to ensuring onboard safety and the performance of these systems is essential for the protection of personnel, assets and preventing fire escalation.
Harsh offshore weather makes metal products and components susceptible to rust and corrosion, additionally, where ceramic wool and similar materials used for fire protection become less effective when wet.

Rubber-based materials are a popular choice in the offshore industry due to their inherent flexibility and durability. Compared to alternatives, such as steel, ceramic wool or fiberglass, rubber can withstand greater temperature extremes, harsher weather conditions and larger vessel movements.
With proven engineering and manufacturing techniques for protection of all kind of fires, from cellulose to hydrocarbon and jet fire,

rubber materials meet corrosion, thermal, fire and mechanical protection requirements, protecting structures from exceeding temperature limits. Rubber has the unique capability of withstanding weather conditions, vessel movements and fire protection over the life of a project.
One passive fire protection product that can significantly reduce maintenance in offshore installations is FireNut™. In refineries or wherever hydrocarbons are transported, pipes are flanged and held together with nuts and bolts. In case of fire, the flanges and pipes should maintain a high level of integrity to avoid escalation. Without proper protection, nuts and bolts can elongate or deform when exposed to fire.
EASING INSPECTION FOR
BOLTED CONNECTIONS Traditional protection is encapsulation of the entire valve and flanges in a fire- insulated metal box - a bulky, heavy and expensive solution that creates challenges during inspection and maintenance. The inspection process for fire-insulated metal boxes is cumbersome and time consuming, as the entire box has to be removed to inspect many thousands of bolted connections, often in hard-to-reach places.
A lightweight alternative to the fire- insulated metal box is FireNut™, a
rubber-based fire protection system that specifically protects just the nuts of a bolted connection. Customisable to accommodate almost any bolt size, the solution is easy to install and extends the service life of connections in the event of a fire as it is resistant to both jet fire and pool fire.
