Milliken has recently reopened the doors to its London Showroom after a six-month closure for major expansion and redesign. The new showroom at 5 Berry Street was designed by M Moser Associates, London office. It features three floors of studio and carpet showroom space and is now three times its original size. Milliken has partnered with M. Moser to develop a brand standard and consistent customer experience model for all its global showrooms.
The Milliken showroom is located in the heart of London’s unique design district, Clerkenwell. The central London neighbourhood has a longstanding association with creative talent, and the arts and crafts movement. In the 1970s the Clerkenwell Workshops were established to foster the establishment
of new businesses, especially those in the arts and crafts sector.
Back in 2001 Milliken was one of the first showrooms to open in the area with only a handful of other companies seeing the huge potential of the area; Milliken was certainly the first carpet showroom to open in Clerkenwell.
Milliken’s aim was to create an impactful new London showroom, which combines the needs of both staff and clients, with areas to showcase, work, interact and socialise. Richard Fisher, the lead designer on the project from M. Moser, explained how this was achieved: “Through creating different settings within one space, we have collaborated with Milliken to enable agile working for the team and the ability to present to and engage customers in a variety of contexts.
“It was really important that the new spaces had a relationship with each other and felt connected, which we achieved through connecting the original showroom to the first and lower ground floors by installing two striking architectural staircases. I love the immediacy of the juxtaposition between original exposed brickwork and the simple clean lines of the revamped studio. The staircase void between the ground and first floor has been really successful in creating an ambient sense of space and light.”
The building that now houses the Milliken showroom was originally a Victorian warehouse which presented its own challenges during the redesign. “We had to be aware of the implications and restrictions of the original structure on our design; particularly when installing the staircases” said Richard.
However, the original features were utilised to create a unique space and really stand out from other showrooms in the area.
“The showroom works closely with the architecture of the building, allowing certain elements to be quite raw, whilst others to be more highly finished. Materials that are integral to the original building, like structure and brickwork are simply painted or left exposed. The closer the proximity of materials to the Milliken product, for example, the floors and joinery, the more finished and carefully detailed the solution becomes.”

The showroom has been designed to offer clients a creative environment in which they can meaningfully interact with our product, experiment with different layout options and create beautiful flooring solutions.
“The new Clerkenwell showroom is true to the Milliken brand standard established by M. Moser in New York, Chicago, Shanghai and Beijing but still captures the vibrant and bohemian spirit that uniquely defines Clerkenwell. You are certainly aware that you are in a Milliken environment but at the same time the space has been designed to connect with the outside and you feel very much a part of the Clerkenwell community.”
