CLEAN UP YOUR ACT
As more consumers and end-users become aware of the growing need to ‘Go Green’, companies should adjust their attitudes accordingly and clean up their act. This is the view of Mark Jankovich, CEO of Delphis Eco.
In today’s society, where headlines are dominated by the rise in pollution and dwindling natural resources, ‘Going Green’ is no longer a buzzword but an essential part of any business strategy. According to research, UK landfills are predicted to run out in less than eight years, and energy costs alone are forecasted to grow by 25% in the next 10 years, highlighting the scale and impact of non- environmental practices.
Not only this, 84% of consumers think that companies should be penalised for failing to care for the environment and according to BIFM’s Sustainability in Facilities Management Report 2015, almost two thirds of consumers (62%) expect high standards of sustainability. What these statistics demonstrate is that there has never been a more important time for businesses to clean up their green act.
A sustainable strategy however, doesn’t just equate to environmental benefits. There are also a number of potentially big business gains to be had by making small operational changes.
Whilst many businesses will have sustainable methods in place, such as using energy saving light bulbs, installing recycling platforms and taking steps to reduce food waste, operators need to go beyond these steps and really evaluate the whole

business operation. In a highly saturated market place, businesses need to take a holistic approach to the sustainability of their operations to achieve a competitive advantage.
‘Going Green’ is no longer a buzzword but an essential part of any
business strategy.
There are a number of small changes which operators can make to enhance the sustainability of their business, without having to make large financial investments. One of the simplest ways operators can do this is through the products they use within their establishment – such as environmentally-friendly cleaning products.
By using eco cleaning products in a busy establishment, this means that consumers are more likely to register a business’ sustainable stance and with 86% of consumers preferring to buy
from a business which has a green reputation and gives back to society, they are therefore more likely to trust the business and chose to revisit the establishment. As well as this, eco cleaning products are made using ecological ingredients, making them safe to use in both front-of-house and back-of-house areas. This means that operators can not only increase the green credentials of their business, but also improve the safety of their staff and customers alike.
Furthermore, a solid environmental programme will also go a long way with regards to attracting the highest quality staff. An increasing number of graduate recruits are stating that the environmental policies and the ethical image of potential employers is "very important" in their decision making process. In the ‘war for talent’ that companies of all sizes have to fight, environmental issues can be a deciding factor, helping to secure a bright future for any business.
As consumers and employees are now more aware than ever of the ethical and environmental impact of goods and services, operators need to plan and implement a sustainability strategy to not only meet the needs of consumers and increase loyalty, but to safeguard the future of their business.
