Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Paul Wilkes, Managing Director of Polaris Plastics.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I was a butcher’s assistant
when I left school at the age of 16. Becoming a butcher wasn’t for me but it gave me a taste of serving customers; I loved the interaction.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?
I was employed as a sales executive for a parcel courier. I enjoyed the selling but decided I wanted to sell products instead of a service. I went to a recruitment and quickly secured a position as a Territory Manager with Vileda. It was a great job and I learnt a lot.
WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR
PERSONALITY? Focused, Considerate, Competitive
IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD,
WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? The Grand Ole Opry. I will leave readers to research what this is and perhaps then they will know why.
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING

There is also the issue of standards; the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association has done a lot to drive up standards in the industry with its Accreditation Schemes guaranteeing that ‘what’s on the box is in the box’ and in the case of refuse sacks, that they are fit for purpose. As long- standing members of the Plastic Sack Scheme, we actively support it; every sack we make is stamped with the CHSA Accreditation Scheme marque.

YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? Focus on your goals. With some clear direction and plenty of hard work you can achieve what you want.

YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? I’d spend it on my family.

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE
CLEANING INDUSTRY? Our world is increasingly one of constant change so to succeed we have to be adaptable. Against this backdrop I believe diversification will be the future. Whatever part of the industry we operate in, be it FM Companies, product manufacturers or distributors, we will need to adapt to evolving trends and innovate new solutions and approaches.

WHAT’S THE MOST UNUSUAL CLEANING
PRODUCT YOU’VE EVER COME ACROSS? White vinegar for removal of limescale. It might work but it gave me an urge for fish and chips.
