CELEBRATING INSPIRATION As Truvox International sponsors the category of Inspirational Leader, International
Sales and Marketing Director Gordon McVean explores what it takes to be an award- winner in this category.
“Genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration”, said Thomas Edison. Most of those involved in the cleaning industry will recognise the perspiration element, but that elusive 1% is often more of a challenge. That’s why inspirational leaders in the sector are celebrated every year at the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards.
Feeling respected, enjoying their work and the understanding that it’s better to be the best than the biggest. These are just some of the beliefs instilled in their employees by last year’s finalists in the Inspirational Leader of the Year category. While they may be at different stages of their careers, Charlie Mowat (The Clean Space), Jeff Bell (Deb Ltd) and Kurt Alois Hegerich (CLARO) all share an inspirational quality that means those working for them recognise the effectiveness of their leadership.
RESPECT Charlie Mowat has ensured that staff come first at The Clean Space. Training and development along with the payment of fair wages shows that the company ethos is about more than just lip service. Being a Living Wage Service Provider means that clients get a better service, but more importantly in Charlie’s eyes, it gives employees a better life - an inspirational aim in anyone’s book.
FUN, FUN, FUN Jeff Bell has instilled a culture that involves employees actually enjoying what they do and he thinks it makes a significant difference to people’s attitudes to work. By encouraging open and honest communication, and a democratic approach to decision making, Jeff believes people perform better. Everyone benefits from Jeff’s enthusiastic, energised and people-centric approach.

SIMPLY THE BEST Kurt Alois Hegerich is a highly rated and well recognised entrepreneur in both Germany and Spain. Now 84, he has spent half his lifetime working with and for the cleaning sector – so it shouldn’t be a surprise he’s picked up a few tricks along the way. Currently the president of the CLARO group of companies and SOL facilities services, Kurt’s approach is to focus on the quality of services so that customers have full confidence in his operations. His company vision is simple, but effective, “We don’t want to be the biggest, only the best.”
The operational implementation of this vision contributed greatly to Kurt being crowned Inspirational Leader of the Year at the inaugural European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards.
WINNER TAKES IT ALL As befitting a leadership award, those in the running for the 2017 awards must be nominated by an employee of their organisation. The business must operate within the professional cleaning sector and like all the awards is open to any service provider, manufacturer or distributors in the cleaning and hygiene sector anywhere in Europe. It is not restricted by job titles either. Leaders come in all shapes and sizes and levels of seniority. The award is about the impact they have, not their pay grade or job title.
The judges will be looking for evidence of nominees’ leadership skills and how their leadership has impacted positively on other employees, and on the business and its customers.
Hopefully, having read about the 2016 award nominees, you’ll be inspired to nominate a leader from your organisation. We know there are lots of them out there across Europe.
