F. BALL IS TOP OF THE CLASS FOR SPEED
AND SAFETY
When contractors needed a speedy solution to fix flooring at a high school, they chose surface preparation products from
F.Ball to do the job.
When renovating schools and educational facilities, there are a number of important points to consider to ensure that the facilities are long- lasting and safe for use. For example, the floorcoverings and the preparation products selected must be able to withstand high foot traffic and provide a durable, easy-to-clean finish.
Most educational facilities shut their doors to students during the summer months, providing them with a unique advantage over most places when it comes to refurbishments. Despite this, it is important to ensure that the products selected allow contractors to complete the installation quickly, ahead of the start of the forthcoming academic year, without leaving behind any unpleasant or hazardous odours or mess.
“When we have a tight
deadline, I will always use F. Ball products, because you know for certain that you’re using a product
that performs exactly as it is supposed to.“
This was the case for contractors from CWC Flooring, who were contracted to refurbish the flooring at Southborough High School in Surbiton, Surrey. They were called in by the school to refurbish the central corridor, including the adjoining staircases, as the existing floorcoverings were beginning to peel

away from the subfloor. They chose products from subfloor preparation products manufacturer F. Ball and Co. Ltd. to complete the job.
The new installation, which was part of a large refurbishment project at the school, required the main corridor to be levelled. After applying F. Ball’s Stopgap P131 general-purpose primer, contractors applied 3 – 5mm of Stopgap Green Bag smoothing underlayment onto the subfloor in order to create an even, smooth surface. Stopgap Green Bag is a general-purpose, low-odour, fast- setting smoothing underlayment with excellent self-smoothing properties. Delivering a high standard of performance, it is designed for use in light- to heavy-duty applications, making it suitable for use in high-traffic areas such as schools and hospitals.
Once the subfloor was levelled, contractors installed the new Polyflor vinyl floorcoverings using F. Ball’s Styccobond F44 solvent-free acrylic adhesive, which was purpose designed for adhering resilient floorcoverings.
Contractors then used Stycco Flex high- strength, flexible tube adhesive to fix new stair nosings onto the refurbished staircases. The high-performance adhesive is an easy-to-use, rapid- curing adhesive with high initial grab and a fast build-up of bond strength. It was specifically designed to secure stair nosings and carpet grippers, PVC cladding, skirting boards and trims, without the need for mechanical fixing.
Commenting on the job, Pierre Allen, Managing Director at CWC Flooring, said: “When we have a tight deadline, I will always use F. Ball products, because you know for certain that you’re using a product that performs exactly as it is supposed to.
“Stopgap Green Bag sets quickly, and leaves a high quality finish, and Stycco Flex was the obvious choice for the stair nosings as safety is a top priority for any school project.”
