10 QUESTIONS

10 QUESTIONS WITH... GILES WHEELER

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Giles Wheeler, Operations Director at Facilicom UK.

Q4

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD,

WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY? I have done a lot of travelling already, however, I would like to visit Tikal, an ancient Mayan citadel in the rainforests of northern Guatemala. History is a subject I really enjoy and I would love to visit these ancient ruins.

Q5 Q6

Q7 Q1

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

I left college at 18 and worked at the Potters Heron Hotel in Hampshire for six months as a waiter. Not only was this a lot of fun but I learned an awful lot through interactions with various people.

Q2 Q3

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I know I’m not the first to say I came into the industry largely by accident, but that’s what happened. I was working for a security company which was bought out. I had to find a new role and could either continue in security or make a change and I ended up going for cleaning.

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR

PERSONALITY? Demanding, social and honest.

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

Better training and development of the managers in the industry.

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW,

WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? Understand your customers as individuals and the organisations as a whole. Tailor your approach to suit their needs.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD

YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? I’d retire and follow Man City around Europe, travel more and spoil my wife.

Q8

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE

ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR

ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? I love dinner parties; you can have some great conversations. Who I would like to invite would vary day to day but today, Genghis Khan, Margaret Thatcher and Pep Guardiola. However, if anyone was to decline I would invite my father as he can talk to anybody about anything and always developed the best conversations.

Q9

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE

CLEANING INDUSTRY? Self-cleaning buildings and robotics.

Zena Goddard, Head of Commercial Sales at SNG, asks:

Q10

IF YOU WERE IMMORTAL FOR A DAY, WHAT

WOULD YOU DO? I’d go to see the historic sites of ancient Persia before they are all destroyed by the troubles in the Middle East.
