News 3 to help people learn new skills Want a career in care?
WE’RE giving people a helping hand into a career in care. A three-week course called Introduction
to Care prepares people for a career in the sector by helping them improve their knowledge and get on-the-job experience. Everyone who completes the course is guaranteed a job interview with our partner organisation Loretto Care. The course covers
training including first aid and dementia awareness, and help writing a CV. People also get a two-
week work placement to help them decide if working in care is for them. The course is one of the first initiatives
from the Wheatley Foundation. Susan Cairns, 49, from Greenfield in Glasgow, took part in the course. She said: “I loved the course. It was
wonderful, extremely useful. “I’d been out of work and my confidence
ndation
and a new care course we’ve set up.
It is also helping roll out more
activities for older people through our Silver Deal programme, in partnership with Glasgow Life. Here we highlight some of the schemes the Wheatley Foundation is funding.

said: “I was job hunting for a few months when I noticed the apprenticeships advertised. I knew I wanted to do something practical and hands-on rather than a desk job, so this is perfect.”
Help to get online
WE have now opened 36 Click & Connect centres around our communities where people can use computers for free – and get tuition on using the internet. Our Click & Connect centres are run in partnership with our parent company, Wheatley Group, and Glasgow Kelvin College and are aimed at helping people who aren’t able to get online. Wheatley Group’s Evelyn McDowall said: “Getting online is essential in the modern world, but too many people are still missing out because they don’t have access to a computer, can’t afford the costs or simply lack the skills and confidence to use the internet. “No one should be left behind because
they don’t have the same resources.” You’ll find a list of Click & Connect centres at

was low – I didn’t even have a CV. “The course made me feel I was worth something.
“My placement was with Loretto Care’s
young people’s homelessness service in Stirling. It was fantastic to see how much staff there really care about their job. “The course wasn’t too intense and
wasn’t too scary. I was worried they might prefer someone younger, but age is definitely no barrier. “I’d like to work in a children’s home and this really helped me get a foot on the ladder.” Wheatley Foundation’s Lorraine McLaren said: “We want to increase opportunities for people in our communities, and this course is a great way for people to see if the care sector is for them. “Everyone who takes part is guaranteed an interview – so it’s a good chance for people to get a helping hand into work.” You don’t need any experience to get on the course – just bags of enthusiasm and a passion for working in care.
