Taxes collected

SSE collects a number of different taxes on behalf of the UK and Irish Governments, but they do not represent an actual cost to the company. For example, as a large employer, SSE collects a significant amount of tax on employee wages, such as income tax. Across the Group, the majority of ‘other taxes’ are made up by the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) tax (see page 5 for more information).

SSE collected £441.7m in taxes on behalf of the UK and Irish Governments in the year to 31 March 2016, compared to £283.5m the previous year.

UK

In the year to 31 March 2016, SSE collected £413.4m in taxes on behalf of the UK Government, compared to £256.5m the previous year. There were in excess of ten business taxes collected in the UK which make up these numbers including PAYE, employees NIC, Climate Change Levy and VAT.

The introduction of the VAT domestic reverse charge (see page 5 for more information) for wholesale energy supplies resulted in a significant increase in the VAT collected by SSE in the year to 31 March 2016 compared to the previous year.
