Taxes paid

Taxes paid by SSE to the UK and Irish Governments, which are a cost to the company, in the year to 31 March 2016 totalled £465m, compared with £506.2m in the previous year. Taxes paid to governments included property, profit, environmental and people taxes.

UK

In the year to 31 March 2016, SSE paid £453.9m of taxes to the UK Government, compared with £490.3m in the previous year. Profit taxes paid in 2015/16 were lower than the previous year, primarily due to:

• reduced gas production profits as a result of lower gas prices; • capital allowances resulting from the Greater Laggan3 acquisition in 2015/16; and • tax relief available on costs associated with closing thermal generation plant.

Environmental taxes paid were lower due to a reduction in the company’s Climate Change Levy liabilities through reduced coal consumption.

3 In October 2015, SSE bought a 20% interest in four gas fields and surrounding areas, approximately 125km north west of the Shetland Islands, known as the Greater Laggan Area. This is to make sure SSE has sufficient gas supplies to provide for its customers.
