With the coffee market showing no sign of slowing, Grant Chippendale, Head of Professional Sales at JURA UK & Ireland, discusses why it pays to serve quality coffee in order to meet current consumer demand.
Our tastes change over time, but if one thing’s for certain it’s that the coffee culture is here to stay. For many, starting the day with caffeine is non-negotiable, but as well as being a focal point of the morning for most, the trend of working and socialising over coffee is also on the rise.
According to recent research by the British Coffee Association, 30% of coffee is consumed out of the home, so it’s no surprise that the UK’s coffee shop scene now boasts almost 25,000 coffee outlets and, what’s more, it’s anticipated that it will exceed 31,400 outlets, with a turnover of £13bn by 2022 .
It’s evident that we have moved from a nation of tea and occasional instant coffee drinkers to a population of coffee aficionados who are exploring a large variety of roast and ground blends.

So, what has caused the country to go crazy over coffee? In the same way that a new generation of gin and craft beer connoisseurs have been born, coffee has experienced its own new wave of enthusiasts, who are keen to navigate the category and explore way beyond regular, instant coffee.
The UK’s love affair with coffee is somewhat thanks to its European counterparts, with popular specialities including American and Scandinavian style filter coffee, shorter black beverages, which are typically favoured by the Italians and the Spanish, as well as the flat white, claimed to have originated in Australia.
Could the rise of coffee consumption also be down to more people having disposable income? Figures would suggest not, but there is a shift in how younger generations spend what they do have, as well as valuing experiences, such as coffee moments, more than material things.
But it’s not just millennials that are indulging in their coffee intake; baby boomers are consuming, on average, 2.2 cups a day in coffee shops, restaurants and bars. One thing that is for certain is that however and wherever it is prepared, all cups of coffee should be made with attention
