TASTES LIKE HEAVEN, BURNS LIKE HELL.
One cold, gloomy November Saturday afternoon, we ventured clockwise around a foggy M25 to the beautiful Kingston- Upon-Thames. This nights raucous box- social was hosted by an infamous punk rock palace, an alternative diamond in a rough of middle-class shopping sprees, early Christmas lights and the harmony of suburbia; The Fighting Cocks. Externally this rock n roll bar is unassuming. Apart from the sign hanging high above featuring a fitting skull logo, this is a black, white and red brick traditional looking town pub. It isn’t until you enter that you are truly blown away by the décor and feel of the place.
Rough around the edges and 50s style, rockabilly prints and huge posters advertising upcoming gigs are immediately striking - the assorted bottle caps nailed in a pattern along the back bar wall was a particular feature that really caught the eye. This place oozed alternative style. The music through the jukebox was some underground band from way back, catchy rock music. Friendly regulars and the bar tender greeted us with a smile and an excellently poured pint of Guinness!
Hi everyone, my name is Jordan Harris. I play guitar and sing in a professional touring band called Skiv, which plays gigs, shows, festivals and soirees in some of the most eclectic and unique pubs, clubs and venues all across the
UK (and beyond). The ambition of this monthly column is to provide an unvarnished “Venue Insight” giving my experiences of some of my favourite and most memorable places to play and visit up and down the country.
