Some big bands have come through The Fighting Cocks and it is no wonder the place is world famous, the music venue feels like its humming with the spirit of previous gigs. As we progressed further in, it struck you as unconventional, grotty and everything you want from a rock and roll venue. The room was rectangular and the stage in the corner facing another bar in the opposite corner, sounds desk plopped in the middle... it feels like it shouldn’t work, but it does so with aplomb.
We kicked things off for the evening and had a really receptive (and quite a big!) crowd enjoying us. It seems people really come out for gigs to the Fighting Cocks in their numbers! Credit to the venue for putting on a gig with “lesser” known punk bands and still having the appeal to pull in the numbers. It turned out to be busy all night and the sound was crisp and not too tinny, a really nice balance. NB Not venue related but after we played we noticed Stuart Pearce in the crowd! That made my night being a West Ham supporter and I even got to shake his hand.
Not only does the venue put on remarkable, ex-England footballer attracting gigs, they also host award winning stand-up comedy, pool nights and even plug in old school arcade machines for the punters. Plenty to do in the self-proclaimed best rock venue in South West London. Add an eclectic and impressive booze collection to this and you have the recipe for one heck of a watering hole.
Incredible night at the Fighting Cocks. This is a venue that has been and is still doing it right for bands big and small in the UK for nearly 100 years. Pay it a visit and get a feel for things yourself, I felt so welcome here and I hope you do too.
