Sibford receives gold from gold medallist

Olympic gold medallist Matt Gotrel MBE presented Sibford School with its very own Gold Award in recognition of the school’s dedication to sport. The former international

sailor, who won Olympic gold in Rio and back-to-back World Championship titles with the men’s eight, was guest of honour at a special Schools Games Mark Celebration Evening hosted by the North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership. He is pictured with Sibford Head

Toby Spence and Sibford School PE teacher Claire Ferley.

The School Games Mark is a

government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to recognise schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

Show jumping triumph

Sibford School’s show jumping team has qualified to compete at the National Schools Equestrian Association Finals at Hickstead on 26 and 27 May 2018. In November, the mixed team of Maizy (year 6), India and Billy

(Year 9) and Henry (Year 12) travelled to Bury Farm Equestrian Club in Buckinghamshire where they came first in their class. Maizy and India, together with Tom (Year 5) and Jack (Year 8), also

competed in the eventer challenge where they came fourth out of a big class. Well done to all ... and good luck for Hickstead.

Plate victories for U14s and U15s

Sibford’s Under 14 Rugby team visited Bodicote Park, home to Banbury RUFC, in November for the Banbury and District Schools Rugby Finals Plate competition. Sibford were playing against Cooper School from Bicester, and what an

exciting game it was! PE teacher Richard Ferley said: “After the first 10 minutes it looked as though we would be losing by a cricket score! However, by half time the team had worked their way back into the game and had taken the lead. “The second half saw the lead change hands four or five times, so much so that at the end no one really knew who had won until it was confirmed as a 29-29 draw with Sibford and Cooper sharing the Plate. “The entire squad, including six Year 8 boys playing up a year, were

incredible and fully deserved to finish as joint District Plate Winners.” The following week it was the turn of the Under 15s to take to the field in the District Finals ... and they saved their best performance for their biggest occasion of the season. Sound defence meant that opponents, North Oxfordshire Academy,

never crossed the try line and this time Sibford enjoyed an outright District Plate victory. Many congratulations to both teams.
