Love your pet… love your vet
Caring for your older cat Cats are experts in hiding signs of illness and so looking out for subtle changes in their behaviour, especially as they get older, can really make a difference.
Here are some top tips:
Sore joints: Studies have shown that around 80% of cats over the age of twelve have arthritis. However, it can be diffi cult to identify because they simply rest more. Because they are naturally athletic animals, they will often still jump, climb and play. Just not as much as they used to. If you’re concerned, ask your vet to check their joints the next time you are visiting.
Weight loss: Senior cats can lose weight due to many different conditions, but it’s often so gradual we don’t notice. It’s a good idea to get into the habit of weighing them on a regular basis and if you notice a downward trend, speak to your vet.
Drinking more: Kidney failure and diabetes are common in older cats and both will cause them to drink more than they should. In fact, cats naturally drink very little, so often a cat who drinks well could be drinking to excess and a check-up by your vet is a good idea.
Eating less: Sore teeth and kidney failure are two of the most likely causes of reduced or changed
appetite in your cat. If their mouth is painful they will often still eat, but may prefer wet food to their kibble. They may also not actually chew properly. It’s diffi cult to check their teeth at home, so if
you’re concerned speak to your vet.
Eating more: An over-active thyroid gland (Hyperthyroidism) and diabetes will make your cat eat more. Whilst this can be a sign of good health, it can also be the opposite – especially if they are losing weight despite their appetite.
There are lots of signs to keep a watchful eye out for. Most vets hold clinics for ‘older pets’ where regular health checks take place. This way any problems can be picked up as early as possible.
Our feline friends can live to a very old age and with the right diet throughout their lifetime and good veterinary care, it’s not unheard of to see cats in their 20s.
